Illinois Pocket Watches

The Illinois Springfield Watch Company was founded in 1870. Its founders were John C. Adams, John T. Stuart who was the former law partner of Abraham Lincoln, John Williams who was president of the First National Bank of Springfield, grocery store owner John B. Bunn and William B. Miller. The company’s first pocket watch was released in 1872, but full blown production did not begin until 1875.

The company needed to be reestablished in 1879 due to financial problems and was renamed the Springfield Illinois Watch Company. Collectors who own antique Illinois pocket watches may be found to have a Stuart, a Miller, a Currier, or the railroad pocket watch known as the Bunn Special.

In 1885, the company underwent another name change to the Illinois Watch Company. Despite being purchased by the Hamilton Watch Company in 1927, pocket watches continued to be manufactured in the Illinois name until 1939.
